Visit Helmsley safely this Easter with support from Ryedale District Council

Ryedale District Council is doing what it can to help visitors with motorhomes or camper vans visit Helmsley safely this Easter.

As the weather gets warmer, many visitors flock to Helmsley to enjoy all the market town has to offer. However, with the rise in visitors, some residents have raised concerns about an increase in litter or extra busy car parks.

To address these concerns, Ryedale District Council is placing extra staff at Cleveland Way car park to help manage the flow of traffic and to make sure that visitors and residents are parking safely. These Officers will also walk to Market Place car park to keep a friendly watch over things and to answer any questions visitors may have. More rubbish collections have been arranged to keep litter off the streets and there will be an increase in the amount of toilet cleans.

In addition, the District Council is asking visitors with a camper van or motorhome to stick to the restrictions of a maximum of 15 vehicles in Cleveland Way car park. They’re also reminding vehicle owners to park vehicles at a safe distance. Guidelines are in place to stay overnight at Cleveland Way car park including keeping the site clean and respecting local residents with no BBQs, awnings or music permitted. Officers will be out and about to check that the restrictions are adhered to and to check that there’s no antisocial behaviour.

To help alleviate any busy traffic, residents and visitors staying close by are urged to walk into town if they are able to. This helps ease any congestion and has benefits for the environment too. Local businesses are being asked to find alternative parking where possible to help ease any congestion in the car parks.

Phillip Spurr, Programme Director of Place and Resources for Ryedale District Council said: “We appreciate that Helmsley is a wonderful place to visit, especially during the Easter holiday. We look forward to welcoming visitors to Helmsley and we offer free overnight parking for campervans or motorhomes within our Cleveland Way car park. This is the only car park in Helmsley where campervans or motorhomes can park. Our Officers will be on hand to help visitors park in the correct spots, so that they don’t park in the area for coaches and end up with a fixed penalty notice.

“We’re doing what we can to help visitors enjoy Helmsley, whilst reassuring residents that we are listening to their concerns. We are proud of Helmsley and its surrounding areas, so please respect the area and take all rubbish home and use the bins provided. Families with children in particular like to enjoy the green and wooded surroundings of the Cleveland Way car park – and we ask that visitors respect this space.

“We each have a part to play to support tourism and to show respect to those who live or work in Helmsley.”

Time restricted toilet facilities are available near Cleveland Way car park. However the discharge of grey or white water isn’t allowed on any of Ryedale District Council’s land or facilities.
