Ryedale District Council gives shoppers the gift of free parking this Christmas
Ryedale District Council is giving shoppers a festive treat – by making free parking available at council-operated car parks from 9 December through to 31 March 2021.
The introduction of the scheme was approved at Full Council on Thursday 3 December in a bid to support retail and hospitality businesses and encourage more people to shop locally.
Councillor Keane Duncan, Leader of Ryedale District Council, said:
“We are delighted to provide free parking to support local businesses and help increase visits to our market towns – not only in the lead up to Christmas but throughout January, February and March when trade might need an extra boost.
“Now more than ever, local shops, cafes and restaurants need the support of our community. Working cross-party we have developed this free parking offer to make it as easy and convenient as possible for people to return to the high streets and help local businesses recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We would like to thank all retailers for their sterling efforts in responding and adapting to the challenges of the coronavirus crisis and would encourage the citizens of Ryedale to continue to respect Covid rules while out and about enjoying Ryedale’s fantastic independent shops and eateries.
“As there is no time limit on the free parking, we hope that people will be responsible and only park for as long as they need, so that we can bring as much trade as possible to our towns and help the local economy get back on its feet.”
Ryedale residents who currently own a paid-for car parking permit will be able to request a permit extension. Please keep an eye on www.ryedale.gov.uk for further details.
